Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
David Wiesner is an American author and illustrator known for his picture books. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration. Wiesner’s work is characterised by detailed, imaginative illustrations, often with minimal or no text.
Wiesner has won the Caldecott Medal three times. He received the award for Tuesday in 1992, The Three Pigs in 2002, and Flotsam in 2007. He has also been awarded Caldecott Honors for Free Fall in 1989 and Sector 7 in 2000.
His published works include Tuesday (1991), Sector 7 (1999), The Three Pigs (2001), Flotsam (2006), Art & Max (2010), and Mr. Wuffles! (2013). Wiesner’s books have been published by Clarion Books and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
In 2014, Wiesner was a finalist for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, which recognises lasting contributions to children’s literature. His book Flotsam won the 2007 Caldecott Medal and was named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book.
Wiesner’s illustrations have been exhibited in galleries and museums, including the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. His book Mr. Wuffles! was published in 2013.
