David Weitzman is an American author, illustrator and designer of children’s books. He earned a Master’s degree in History and studied at Purdue University, Northwestern University and the University of California, Berkeley. He apprenticed for two years with book designer and printer James Robertson at Yolla Bolly Press.
Weitzman has written and illustrated around twenty children’s books. His titles include Pharaoh’s Boat, Rama and Sita: A Tale of Ancient Java, John Bull: A British Locomotive Comes to America, Superpower: The Making of a Steam Locomotive, and Windmills, Bridges, and Old Machines.
His work has received multiple design and literary honours: Windmills, Bridges, and Old Machines was designated a Distinguished Book by the Association of Children’s Librarians in 1982, and Superpower won a Bronze Medal at the Leipzig International Book Design Exhibition.
Besides writing and illustrating, Weitzman has taught classes in writing, illustration, and book design, and served as a curriculum adviser for educational institutions including the University of California, Berkeley and the American Society for Eastern Arts.
