Alexander McCall Smith is a renowned author, best known for his series of novels, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Born in what is now Zimbabwe, McCall Smith pursued his education in Scotland, where he studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He later became a professor of Medical Law at the same institution.
McCall Smith’s literary career began with academic texts and children’s books, but he gained international recognition with the publication of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in 1998. The series, set in Botswana, follows the adventures of Mma Precious Ramotswe, the country’s first female detective. The books have been translated into numerous languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide.
In addition to this series, McCall Smith has authored several other successful series, including The Sunday Philosophy Club, featuring the character Isabel Dalhousie, and 44 Scotland Street, which originated as a serialized novel in The Scotsman newspaper. His works often explore themes of morality, philosophy, and human nature, presented with a gentle humour.
McCall Smith has received numerous accolades for his contributions to literature. In 2007, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to literature. His books have been adapted for radio, television, and stage, further cementing his status as a significant figure in contemporary literature.
