Our review:

Sar Wylda & The Legendary Goldbreaker is a creative, fantasy story in a world where “Dinobeasts reigned supreme and humans had to live in between. Hungry beasts would terrorise small villages at night“. The story focuses on Sar, a smart 12-year-old girl who grew up on a farm dreaming of racing Dinobeasts. Her dreams are crushed when she loses her sight.

Sar’s character is relatable to tweens and teens, going from being headstrong at times but also struggling with self-doubt. She battles with her dad to assert her independence to race Dinobeasts despite her disability. Sar’s desperation to fulfil her ambition puts her life in serious danger but also presents a solution.

But, with the solution comes a high risk if she is to compete with the best. She needs to overcome her self doubt, embrace her courage and catch up with the years of training that she has missed. Will her determination, knowledge and a spirited Dinobeast be enough to achieve her dream?

Dinobeasts that race are fed an enhancing fruit which makes them much faster and more powerful to compete in races. The huge size of the Dinobeasts and the speeds they reach make the sport extremely dangerous. Woven into the story is Sar’s colourful family with strong personalities, a splash of spiritual worlds, and a Sabrecat threatening Sar’s farm and family.

Our verdict:

Sar Wylda and the Legendary Goldbreaker is a feast for the imagination. With inspirational characters, a touch of science, fast-paced life-and-death situations and bags of adventure for children aged 8 years and up.
