It is dispiriting to meet adults who have taught themselves to erase all traces of their own ‘first world’ to fit in with the conventional demands of other ‘grown-ups.’. It is even more lowering when one sees this self-censorship in people one knew, scampering about in primary school, or as moody adolescents writing love-poems to no one in particular.
I don’t know Oliver Jeffers but I have no doubt that he is someone who has kept his inner child-garden well-maintained and well stocked with the bright, random, startling and fiercely important thoughts and images which make perfect sense when we are very young.
Every page of this enchanting book teems with pictures and ideas which cannot fail to engage a curious child aged between three and seven. I can confirm this personally because I’ve road-tested it (quite a few times!) with my own three-year-old grandson.
Oliver Jeffers is an award winning children’s book author and illustrator. Following ‘Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth’, released in 2017, two more ground-breaking picture books in the series have been published: Here We Are: Book of Animals, and Here We Are: Book of Numbers. Both contain inspiring artwork and though-provoking material that is ideal to discuss with nursery aged children, or to use as a basis for artwork ideas in EYFS.
